Kate Francis – Senior Research Analyst

Kate Francis

I joined the Analytics department at NATS in August 2011. Prior to this I completed a BSc in Mathematical Studies and an MSc in Operational Research (both at Southampton University) and then spent two years working in Mott MacDonald’s Highways department analysing Managed Motorways. The move to the Aviation sector seemed a natural one for me since both areas of transportation are concerned with similar metrics (such as capacity, delays, safety and environmental impacts). Although we use different data sets, the analytical, technical and consultancy skills I learnt at Mott MacDonald have been invaluable during my time at NATS.

My current role is based in Analytics’ Airports and Consultancy team. We use Big Data, Fast Time Simulation models and bespoke tools to analyse current performance and provide airport capacity enhancement solutions to airport customers around the world. We also use our knowledge and expertise to provide insight and recommendations to our customers to help inform key infrastructure planning decisions, in order to optimise the value obtained from existing or potential future assets.

I love that my role has given me the chance to work in a team of world leading experts. I have had the chance to play a key role in producing several innovative systems for airports such as Heathrow, which will make a tangible difference to the way they run the airport day-to- day. I have also had the opportunity to travel and work abroad which has been both fascinating and exciting in equal measure.
