Engineering Training

Training solutions to suit any customer

NATS is a global leader in aviation providing a safe, efficient and effective Air Traffic Management service. This highly effective operation is built on a sophisticated engineering infrastructure consisting of over a hundred different RADAR, Communication, Navigational Aid and Data Comms sites spanning the entire United Kingdom. In order to maintain these complex systems NATS employs and trains (in-house) highly motivated and performing engineers to work at the highest level, capable of operating in critical and high pressure situations.

Being an industry leader NATS has always chosen to train its own engineering staff utilising Teacher Accreditation Program (TAP) accredited professional trainers with specialist system knowledge, skills and understanding required to take apprentice level students all the way to high performance specialist engineers.

NATS has developed an extensive engineering training catalogue which customers can now benefit from by accessing the very same high level training used to train its own in-house staff to the highest possible standards.

We have over 15 years’ experience of training to a competency-based training scheme.

Our courses are competitively priced and can be hosted internationally as well as at our state-of-the-art training facility in Southampton England.

FERNAU 2020 DME

This 4 day course covers the purpose, function and architecture of this UHF Distance Measuring equipment and the interdependencies within the system. The engineer will be able to describe the signal path through the system, how to use test equipment and the monitoring system to determine serviceability and correctly diagnose and rectify defects.

Frequentis VCS 3020x

VCS3020x Voice Switch is used by airports and ATCCs around the world. This course describes how the switch routes the Air/Ground/Air and telephone voice information from the controller position to the external equipment and vice-versa. The students will use the monitoring system to verify system serviceability and will use it to rectify faults. The engineer will also learn how to configure system software to support additional new assets.

IRVR 2000

IRVR provides an estimate of the visual guidance the pilot of an aircraft will have at touch down and roll-out or during take-off. This 4 day course describes the operation and design of the IRVR and how the control and monitoring can be used to interrogate the runway components and scrutinise system reliability. The engineer will also resolve faults on the system and bring it back into service.

NDB SA50/ NDB SA100

The Non Directional Beacon is a navigational aid used in a variety of roles within the aviation industry. This course describes the purpose, function and architecture of an NDB and how to set up system parameters from scratch. The engineer will use a variety of tools and test equipment to diagnose faults and return the system to an operational state.

Thales DVOR 432 and RACAL DVOR MkIIa

DVOR is a navigational ground beacon which provides an omnidirectional signal enabling an aircraft to determine its bearing. Engineers attending this course will learn the principles and architecture of the DVOR and have the opportunity to carry out periodic maintenance, fault diagnosis and the replacement of faulty units. They will also gain experience in setting to work the system and restoring it to operational service.

Anritsu Sitemaster user course

The operational performance of transmitters and receivers is only as good as the aerials that support them. This course describes how engineers can reliably monitor the performance of an aerial and feeder system and detect both a degradation in performance and faults caused by deterioration or damage. These principles are then used practically by monitoring aerial systems to determine those are serviceable and those that are faulty.

Park Air NM7000A & NM7000B ILS

The instrumented Landing System is a ground-based navigational aid that provides precision guidance to an aircraft as it approaches and lands on a runway. This course describes the Architecture and functionality of the ILS and how engineers can remotely monitor the system for serviceability. The engineer will be given the opportunity to carry out periodic maintenance, fault diagnosis and the replacement of faulty units. They will also gain experience in setting to work the system and restoring it to operational service.

Communications Service Monitor 2945A

The portable Communications Service Monitor is used for carrying out routine and maintenance testing on radio transmitters, receivers and other radio and navigational equipment such as DVOR and ILS. On this course the engineer will use its facilities, equivalent to the standard test equipment used in radio system maintenance, when setting a transmitter, receiver, multicoupler and isolator to work.

CISCO IOS Introduction

This 3 day course introduces engineers in System Support, test or design environments to Cisco IOS-based switches. The course explores Cisco architecture, how IOS Routers interconnect networks, OSI Layer configuration and useful configuration and diagnostic commands.

Introduction to IP Networking

During this 3 day course delegates will learn how to allocate IP addresses to computers, making use of masks to divide them into sub-networks of differing sizes, such that any given pair of computers can communicate. They will also have the opportunity to test and correct faults on networks using software tools and protocol analysis.
We can also design and deliver bespoke training in which we work with clients from scratch to identify specific learning objectives and develop the right solution for them. Contact us for more information.
