En route

A managed en route ATC service for military controllers

In 2006, NATS signed the Future Military Area Radar Services (FMARS) contract with the UK Ministry of Defence. Within FMARS we provide the UK military with the facilities to conduct en route air traffic control alongside their civilian counterparts in a Joint and Integrated Model for the UK.

The military controllers work closely with civilian controllers to ensure safe co-ordination of traffic.

This comprehensive managed service, operated by Ministry of Defence controllers, delivers a range of services to civil and military aircraft operating outside controlled airspace. The military controllers work closely with civilian controllers to ensure safe co-ordination of traffic.

Military services include:

  • Aid to aircraft in distress
  • Radar control to aircraft flying in uncontrolled airspace
  • Radar control of aircraft crossing national airways.
  • Delivered incrementally to meet safety and operational needs, both London Air Traffic Control Centre (Military) and Scottish Air Traffic Control Centre (Military) will benefit from an advanced common platform. This delivers flight and surveillance data processing, future controller tool sets and improved support systems.

Working together and building on a relationship that has served the UK well for the past four decades will ensure that military and commercial operations can continue to operate effectively in increasingly complex and congested airspace.
