Instrument procedures can be roughly divided into Standard Instrument Departures, Standard Instrument Arrivals and Instrument Approach Procedures. They can also be either conventional or Area Navigation (RNAV) based. Conventional procedures use navigation aids such as VOR, DME, NDB, and ILS, whilst Area Navigation procedures generally use GPS.

Procedures are designed to specific criteria, which ensure aircraft maintain a minimum clearance over obstacles. They must also meet air traffic control separation requirements and take into account the physical and operational restrictions of the aircraft involved.
