Human Factors

Optimising the human contribution

The ‘Human Factor’ is crucial to the safe and efficient operation of any complex safety-critical system. Recognising the human element of the system not only leads to a safer operation but also leads to greater productivity and smoother implementation of technology.

Whatever the subject, our courses and services are delivered by an expert in that field.

Whatever the subject, our courses and services are delivered by an expert in that field.

The NATS Human Factors team delivers real safety and performance benefit to both NATS and our clients’ operations by optimising the human contribution, of which training and the assessment of knowledge, skills and abilities is an essential part.

The team have a wealth of experience and expertise in all aspects of training, learning and assessment; whether this is working closely with others to understand their specific training needs; designing and delivering high quality courses and learning experiences; or advising on best practice in assessment techniques. We also coach other trainers so that they can also ensure that they provide their students with the best training

Individual specialists draw on a large number of fields of study from Psychology, Psychometrics Technology and Management disciplines, with a range of qualifications including PHD, MSc, C.Psychol and MEng. This means that whatever the subject, our courses and services are delivered by an expert in that field.

In addition to our standard courses, we also offer tailored courses where we adapt the course length, content and focus in order to meet clients’ specific requirements. We can also design and deliver bespoke training in which we work with clients from scratch to identify specific learning objectives and develop the right solution for them.

Recent examples of courses we have designed and delivered:

  • A ten-day ‘Introduction to Human Factors’ course was delivered to the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (this course has been accredited by the British Psychological Society). The key benefit of this course was to provide delegates with an understanding of the theory behind the key ‘Human Factors’ in Air Traffic Management, which included the hands on application of human factors techniques and methods.
  • The first module of the Advanced Training Learning Assessment Skills (ATLAS) programme, which is a comprehensive and highly interactive ‘train the trainer’ package where delegates are taught the latest scientific theories and methods to equip them to deal with any training situation and/or trainee.
  • A fatigue management e-learning package to help individuals understand the effects of fatigue on safety and performance and provide tools and techniques for managing their fatigue effectively.
  • A 2 hour workshop in which trainee controllers were introduced to and practiced strategies to enhance their learning experience whilst studying at NATS and to boost their confidence and, ultimately, their performance.
