Enhanced Arrival Procedures enabled by GBAS


Ground-based augmentation systems (GBAS) provide increased positional accuracy and can enable new designs of precision approach procedures at airports. These concepts include Increased Glideslope (IGS) where the angle of the approach is steeper than today and Multiple Runway Aiming Points (MRAP) where aircraft touchdown dependent on their expected runway exit.


Precision approach procedures enabled by GBAS can improve the noise impact of arrival aircraft and help to improve runway efficiency, increasing runway throughput and reducing fuel burn.


Dependent on deployment of GBAS ground station at an airport and equipage on aircraft, the concept would be mature to be considered for Operational deployment from 2018 onwards.
